Caeletherial

Born to humans, these immortal beings appeared five thousand years ago by the dozens. Believed to have traveled down to Corante from Luxcaeli, an ethereal location open to transcended spirits, little is known about why they chose to forsake their peaceful and eternal existence amongst the stars to dwell among mortals.

Though immune to age after maturity and capable of impressive constitution and healing, it was discovered after several generations that a caeletherial being could be slain. After 'death', however, they were reborn to mortal mothers and eventually recovered all of the memories and abilities of their past lives. In spite of this, they do not recall their existence before Corante.

Fearful of the strange and powerful race gaining popularity and reverence among the lower class, kings, evokers and arcanists banded together for the first time in history to destroy the alien race. Though they successfully slayed several dozen caeletherial, the slain re-appeared a generation later and struck back. When the Caeletherial Insurrection was over, no doubt remained that the new race was superior to human in every way.

The caeletherial banded together and discussed their reason for existing on the mortal world and declared themselves "Divine Guardians", protectors of the human race. They appointed one ruler, the strongest advocate of peace among them, The Empress of Mirrors. This empress reappointed devout human followers as rulers to the kingdoms of Corante, and created 'ranks' of Guardians to protect humans from their often opportunistic fellows evokers and arcanists. To prevent corruption among her own kind, she forbade caeletherial from owning property or holding an office above advisement.

The Empress of Mirrors believed living on the generosity of the nobility the guardians advised would teach her kind humility, but over the millennia, it created dissention instead. Many caeletherial, still bitter from generations of persecution, believed the empress overly sympathetic to the lesser race of humans. Many believed they should rule the humans, not act subordinately to them. Deviating from their appointed roles as guardians, defectors gathered in secret and formed Fidelux Etheria, True to the Light of the Divine. This society met in secret for over a millennia, awaiting an opportunity to shift the balance of power among the caeletherial.

When the population of evokers seemed to swell, the Fidelux Etheria sided with them to overthrow the empress. The battle that ensued ravaged several countrysides, resulting in thousands of casualties. The empress and her court were defeated after a week of vicious skirmishes, but the Fidelux Etheria were also devastated, leaving less than a handful of caeletherial alive. The evokers used their high numbers to secure footholds in the major kingdoms to gather and await the return of the immortal race. But the next generation did not seem to yield the missing guardians as had always been the case in the past. Believing the caeletherial had lost their connection to Luxcaeli, the evokers sought out and slayed the few remaining guardians.

That was over a hundred years ago. Evokers became the strongest of the human spell casters, seeking out and slaying arcanists to prevent any competition. Evokers took on the 'roles' the caeletherial had left behind, assuming the titles of the guardians. Through influence and fear, they became the unofficial ruling strength of Corante's kingdoms.
